low connectivity on Ethernet card

Hi,

I want to connect my laptop to an Ethernet connection using cable modem. The connection works great when I have it plugged into my desktop.

When I take the same connection to my laptop, it attempts to access the network address (takes a while to do this). When it does connect, it shows as limited or no connectivity.

There is an IP address but there is no data transfer to the Internet or Outlook 2002. What should I do differently?
