I turned off my PC last night after a session on the internet but when I booted up this morning it said there was no internet connection. I traded inputs on the router but no change. Obviously, this PC works fine. Is there any thing I can check or replace to diagnose this problem? I have XP and IE, Ver.8. I hate to admit defeat and head for the repair shop without trying something.

Whatever your router plugs into (if it plugs into a modem), unplug it & the router from AC power. Wait 30 seconds or so, then plug in the devices from the wall to the PC, as in modem, then firewall, then router, etc.

Next, restart your PC.

Next, try pinging something: Start->Run->cmd-> type "ping without the quotes...do you get a reply? If not ping the router, same procedure except insert the router's IP address (usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1, check your manual).

If you get a reply then the router's working. Next type in "ipconfig /all" to see your IP address and other information. Report back.

Tony,
Thanks for your step by step answer. Before trying it I once more attempted to get my email after a 2-day rest. It worked perfectly. The inconsistancy of my PC/Internet drives me crazy. It's hard to get a handle on real problems. I will keep your answer in my "Just in case" file. Thanks again.

You should start a PING as suggested above and leave it running for 24 hours.

Do ONE ping to and one to your router in DIFFERENT CMD windows.

Then, terminate both of them via Control C and see if either of them dropped any significant percentage of pings.

If the router DIDN'T and the Google DID, then I'd look toward your internet provider/router.

If the router drops AND Google drops, I'd look more to your computer, your router, or the cable between.

You can also use this technigue when you are experiencing problems to see where the problem is.

If this occurs again, check you have connection to your router, then go into the router by typing its IP Address into your Browser. Then go check the line stats. Maybe you have an weak ADSL signal which is occasionally being swamped by electrical noise/interference. This could be from something in the house, e.g. arcing thermostat, to an external problem.

Correction to my last post:

If the router DIDN'T and the Google DID, then I'd look toward your internet provider/MODEM (not router as I said).

If the router drops AND Google drops, I'd look more to your computer, your router, or the cable between. (this statement was correct)
