I have a CD Writer and a CD ROM Drive with Drive letter D:\ and E:\ suddenly I am unable to see both the drive letter and can only see the c:\ drive what should I do I ahve never seen this problem in Windows 2000 Professional. Thanks.
So that's why they aren't "inventoried" and assigned drive letters. Use the hardward wizard and reinstall the drivers. That usually cures devices that won't start. If you continue to have problems, check the cabling to the units. Sometimes, the connector will loosen causing the command lines to be open.
WindowWizard's answer has merit. Check it out, and as lander asked, what other hardware or software have you installed prior to this problem beginning? Something most likely caused a problem in your system configuration, if the cabling checks out okay. In order to fix it, you might (several options):
1. Uninstall and then reinstall the devices. Go into device manager and uninstall them; then reinstall them.
2. Check for upgrades for their drivers and/or firmware.
3. Uninstall any software (including antivirus or "freeware" you may have downloaded OR Windows service packs or hotfixes) or hardware you installed. You will still need to reinstall the CD Rom's, most likely.
This is most likely a compatibility problem, as I take it the devices were working originally, then failed. By uninstalling both the CD devices AND the conflicting hardware drivers or program(s) and reinstalling them in a different order and upgrading any drivers or firmware, you may be able to fix the issue. ......then again, it just might be plain incompatible and can't work.....good luck.
P.S. Whenever installing any hardware or software, make sure and disable your antivirus program, or it will often mess up your installation. whythisagainwhythisagainwhythisagain
Yes What I did was Install Nortons Internet Security 2001 on top of Nortons Antivirus 2003. That was the cause of all the problem but I have removed everything But I cant figure out how to solve this problem for a CD ROM Drive.
As whythis suggests, completely remove the CD ROM drives from the system, including the drivers. (You may even want to physically remove them during one boot cycle.)
Then, using the hardware wizard (I like wizards ), reinstall the drives, and add the drivers back in. Be sure you have the latest drivers for you OS.
For what it's worth..this happened to me with Nero and a Yamaha 3200E burner on my personal system. I played hell tryin to fix it including all things posted and more, but reinstalling Windows was the only thing to fix it. I believe it was Windows Media Player's Roxio plug-ins that did it, but im not exactly sure. It just decided to act up on me one time after working perfectly for months, and never worked again. So i reinstalled..
:\ it sucked..but it worked! ha-ha... pbxman
