Hi, I just lost connection with a W98 computer to my workgroup. Only when I install netbeui on this W98 computer I am able to see the Workgroup icon but when double clicking on it, it's empty. My other network computers W2000 and WXP can see each other but can't see the W98. No firewall installed. I must add that I reinstalled TCP/IP. Also this computer is wired to the router and will not connect to the Internet and will not access my Belkin router through 192.168.2.1. This computer was working two days ago. The NIC was replaced. It sees itself in network neighborhood.

Thanks

BTW, checked I had W98 automatically assign an IP address to TCP/IP, came up all zeroes. Later assigned it manually and yet winipcfg lists it all zeroes, released and renewed to no avail. This is a new nic, the previous one had the same problem. It lists fine in device manager.

Thx.

Additional info, changed nic to another PCI slot and same result.

I would like to have someone recommend me something about this situation. I see replies to all sorts of questions, what happens with this one. Am I in the wrong forum? This is not such a bizarre case.

Thanks

And pinging the router shows?

If you can't ping the router and you don't get an auto IP address it indicates something wrong between the two. But you knew that.

Probable best bet is to delete the NIC , power down, pull it out, power up one time to create the baseline system to go thru a NIC install again.

Have found that it is generally the NIC drivers that cause the problem, but since I'm mostly lantastic and netbios it doesn't affect me as much. Netbios helps keep the adapters awake.

Thx Ed,

Problem solved. Removed card and reboted, reinstalled card and then got an APIPA IP address not released by winIPCFG but at least now I had an address. Used Winsockfix and got an IP address within range and it now works. Thx, yr recommendation paved the way to at least get an IP address.
