lost all file associations?

I have a user that has completely baffled me, when he started up his computer,he lost all file associations.
when I went into the registry, that portion of the reg is GONE. he had the latest NAV loaded. all backups of the reg seem to be effected. while I am rebuilding his machine, he did the same thing on another machine. He claims he is doing nothing different, and I have verified that it has no Viruses and had the latest Norton installed

ANY ideas???

Trying my very hardest not to be cynical

He is either;
1. Incredibly unlucky
2. Being economical with the truth
3. Running a buggy/corrupted program
4. Downloading/transferring something that is doing this without his knowledge, AV packages have a hard time detecting memory resident worms.

I suppose one other option is that the copy of scanreg is corrupted.

Did you check the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE or both?

Try this:
Restore standard file associations:
rundll setupx.dll,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 c:\windows\inf\shell.inf

It will appear nothing happens, but shutdown and restart and see if there's a difference.

I checked both HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE both were dead.
thanks, that restore worked wonderful, I was able to do
the rest manually to get one of the machines up and going
I'm going to disassemble the other one to see if I can
figure out what is going on.

Personally I think that its something in his mail and we will be going through that today
