I run an NT 4.0 SP5 server (file server, PDC) and a few of my workstations have this very annoying problem that I cannot, for the life of me, get rid of.

Every so often, they will try to save a file to a share and a message box will pop up informing them that the share is not available. It's a standard Microsoft Error window similar to the one you would get if your network cable was unplugged. I have searched and searched and have found nothing substantial yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

Pikk

Have you checked the server Event Logs to see if anything is throwing an error.

When the error appears on your Workstations, can you PING the server?

When the connection is lost, open a Command Prompt on the Workstation and type...

PING 192.168.1.1

Change the 192.168.1.1 to your servers IP Address. It should return the time it takes to contact the server.

Also, when the connection is lost can you still see the server share in the Network Neighbourhood?
New Zealand, a great place to visit.

If you are using the UNC path to reach the share, try mapping a network drive to the share. Some programs do not handle the UNC path mapping consistantly.

Cheers.

To PH and Darran

Actually, it will ping fine. Also, these are already network mapped shares. I know...it's been a boggler for me too. Thanks for the input!!

It doesn't occur when a PC renews a DHCP lease does it? -----------------------------------------------------

TheLad,

Actually, you know I never bothered to check that. Darn-it...this may the problem. I'll look into this and let you know what I find. You'd be my hero if this is the problem! :))

Thanks for that!!

HI.

Check also for licensing issues.
Is the server a "normal" NT or SBS?
Are you in PER SERVER or PER SEAT mode?
How many licenses and how many workstations?
Do you have licensing errors in the Event logs?
Check out Administrative Tools - Licensing.
