Hi,
I have a small customer that has 2 only(XPH & 98SE) systems connected via an ethernet crossover cable.

About once or twice a week the XP machine starts up and the Lan connection is disabled with the red cross.

It may be hardware but thought I would check and see if any others have seen this problem.
Could the crossover be the problem?

The red x means it doesn't recognize a physical connection so it must be the cable/jacks.

Make sure the 98 computer is started and logged in before starting the xp computer.

How long is the crossover cable?

I have seen troubles with the NICs trying to connect to each other at 100Mbps. Force the NICs to 10Mbps and network was more reliable.

Turn of Wake on LAN on the XP.

The always on adapter is in an unknown state at startup.
