Has anyone every had a problem where they login to there domain, have access to the entire network for about 5-10 minutes and then lose there connection?

I can't seem to find the problem. I have been working around by opening a microsoft access database (I call keep_alive.mdb) and this of course creates a lock file on the server I am connected to. With this lock file open I don't lose my connection.

I don't mind doing it this way, but I am rather stumped on where to begin looking for the problem. If I couldn't connect at all, I would have a clue, but I can connect...

Any suggestions where to begin looking.

Regards,
Tim

More info please...

1. What OS is your desktop?
2. When did this start? Has it always been this way?
3. Does it happen on other desktops?

I am running windows ME. The Webserver is running Windows NT 4.0, the backup server is also running Windows Nt Server.

I come in, put in the back up drive into the back up server and then boot it up. (I also start Network File Monitor Pro). I then sit at my desk, turn on my computer and login.

I see "connecting to //BACKUP" blah blah.... and everything is normal. The backup server can always be reached by the webserver no matter what.

My computer (the tech support) is the only one who can access the backup server. (that I know of).

The guy before me had a Net+, A+ and a .... some other certification from Microsoft and he couldn't figure it out either. So the problem has been occuring for several months now. I don't think it ever worked right.

Thanks for the reply,
Tim

So when you say you lose the connection from this ME machine. Are you losing a mapped drive? Can you browse it via unc paths? Can you do a start>find>files>computer, and search by computer name for it? Can you still ping it?

I was never able to ping it due to firewall/anti virus software. But I do lose the mapped drive and I am unable to find it using the UNC and it's not found using the search.

All the other computers on the network do not have this problem, so its only limited to my computer.

Go to device manager, open the properties of your network card, look at the last tab, i think its power management, uncheck the option to allow windows to turn it off. Reboot and login, test it out.

I don't have any power management options in the device manager for my network card.

*(Control panel-> system -> device manager -> Network Adapters ->RealTekRTL8029... no power anywhere.

Thanks,
Tim

And you opened it up and looked at all the tabs?

Question, a couple of other likely possibilities:

1. Have you scanned for spyware? If so, what programs did you use?
2. Have you tried updating the drivers for your network card? Realtek drivers are generic, have you pulled the card out to see if there are identifying manufacturer's marks on the card, or does it just have an 8029 chip?
3. Perhaps in those tabs on device manager, you can force the link to 100mbps, full duplex (if you have a 10/100 hub and 10/100 cards on the other PCs).
