Hi All

I have a D-Link Wireless Router and I am looking for a repeater or booster to help boost my WS. I keep getting week signalling and disconnection issues and I have researched this issue and have found that a booster is required.

Any suggestions as to what type of repeater or booster i should get? Please keep in mind I use two laptops simultaneously on the wireless router at least one floor up from the router for a total of 50+ feet of distance.

Thanks

AvayaHelp,

The range can/is affected by the environment in which it operates. I would guess that this is a location at work where there might be reinforced concrete as a floor(with metal grid). Depending on the placement, a 1ft floor at an angle of 45 degrees appears as 1.5ft and at say 2 degrees would effectively be about 50ft.

The cleanest most reliable solution at home or at work would be to provide another AP connected to the router(via wire) in the second location. This could be cabled through a wire closet or?

Another solution would be to attach an external antenna with higher gain (available through D-Link). Most included antenna's are 1db gain and you can get them up to 8db gain. This appraoch may or may not solve your problem satisfactorily.

Look at this AP, and see suport for "Wireless Distribution System". I would stay with one mfg even though they all are supposed to operate within the same standard.

DWL-2100AP

Hope this Helps

one thing you need to consider is line of site between router and PC. if the router is in the same room and its in line of site with the PC your signal should be excellant.
If the signal has to penetrate through walls then you experience degradation of signal quality and/or loss of signal. One thing you can do is mount the router on the wall and then angle the Antenna(s). try a getting better external antenna for both the router and the PC. They also have High gain antennas that mount to the wall or ceiling and have a long coax cable that goes to the router.
If you decide to purchase an access point then be sure its the same brand as your router. I have run into compatibility issues with these for some weird reason.

Thank you both for the help.

I have heard that I should stay away from D-Link, apparently even Microsh*t is publically stating they have experienced issues with Windows and D-Link products. My local PC store is even going to stop selling D-Link in '06. Heard any truth to this?

This issue is in my home. I work from home and to run cable from the basement to the 1st floor office is a bit of a issue, doable but a hassle never the less. Looks like it is the better way to go tho.

Thanks

You may be able to get a better antenna for your Router dependant on the model. Check out the specs and see if it can have an Upgraded one.
Many people belive it is the router that contoils the range, but it's actually the arial.
Many 3com devices have a standard range but they supply harware to boost the signal upto a couple of km.

I would go with purchasing 8db gain antenna, if your router has only 1 antenna you can get the dual antenna kit and you could also get the dual antenna kit for your desktop. If you feel lucky, some wireless routers have a modification to increase the output power. But location and line of site are 2 big factors. If the wireless router is behind someting or there's stuff obstructing the signal the signal can be degraded. Same goes with the antenna on your PC where your are receiving the signal from the router.

Thanks all
