I just ordered a Intel P4: 1.7GHz , Socket 423. Now I'm looking for a mother board for that chip. I was looking at the ASUS P4T and wondering if that mother board will fit the chip i just bought. Since i haven't bought it yet, if you guys have suggestions for better mother boards for around the same price, that would be great too. Just tell me the model and where i can get it at.

Also, do all cases fit all motherboards?? or do i need to buy a new case also? Right now i have a Dell system running Intel P3. I was hoping to just put in my new motherboard and processor. Can i do that?

Thanks all

With a DELL case they use their own power supply. It would probably be cheaper in the long run to buy a new case.

You can use the *Intel D850GB motherboard with Intel 850 chipset* for the P4, unfortunately it uses RDRAM so you'd have to buy more. There are other Intel motherboards with 845 chipsets (I think) that utilize PC133 SDRAM.

Good luck!

Jisoo22 isn't the chipset for the chip i bought a 423?? I thought thats what it meant by 'Socket 423'.Since I already have purchased this chip, i need a motherboard to fit the chip.

Thanks though

The chipset designation (i845, i850, Via266etc.) refers to the controller chips that manage information on the motherboard - the flow of data across the bus. The socket designation (socket370, socket423, etc.) is a designation of the footprint of the processor - the number usually includes how many physical pins connect to the socket, but the point of the designation is to insure that you get a processor and motherboard that match.

You need a motherboard which will accept a socket423 processor. The P4 is available in socket423 and socket478 format. These are also referred to as PGA-423 and PGA-478. PGA stands for Pin Grid Array, i.e. socket(as opposed to slot processors).

The Asus P4T does in fact support the Intel Socket423 specification, but like the Intel board referenced above, requires RDRAM. With the price of RDRAM down the way it is, I would definitely buy this board and the RDRAM.

What you need to look for with any motherboard is support for the Socket423 specification, the particular features that you may want (USB 2.0 spec, for example) and RAM requirements.

I am an Asus beleiver, and recommend the P4T, but there are many fine boards out there.

Good luck.

If I'm going to hell anyway, why should it matter if it's in a handbasket?

Dave, that was VERY helpful. Thanks very much for the detailed response. I really appreciate it.
