i've been trying to install windows longhorn [ver 4053] on a computer for a friend of mine. it seems to install but after the installation, the furthest it gets is the desktop (just the wallpaper, no taskbar or icons) and a working cursor. i've tried installing it a half dozen times or so on a fat32 and ntsf file system.

the computer is a hewlett packard with an intel mobo with phoenix bios. it has a pentiii 800mhz processor, 128 mgs ram and 10gig hd.

does anyone know why i am having this problem. thx, maxwell

Try Googling and see what others are saying about that version.

Try Safe Mode and see if you get a full Desktop.

Being early beta or preview you can't expect it to be plain sailing either.

Your RAM size might be a problem too. 256 or 512MB might be the minimum.

linney, on all install attempts, after the first few attempts to reboot, all i get is the bootmenu. i tried every option on it including safe mode. when i try "normal" or last good configuration, the computer freezes. safe mode just runs a list of window's files up the screen.

If you want to persevere with this, perhaps a Bios update, turning off any Bios virus scanners, removing unnecessary hardware, especially anything USB.

I would vote for additional RAM.
XP needed a minimum of 128Meg which proved insufficient when you run some greedy progs.
I would only guess LongHorn requires more RAM.
And, hey, 10Geg HD? Are you kidding?

yep, 10 gigs. i'm guessing his computer was built around 2000

Nah, 1998. You can't even buy 40Gb HD without a stuggle!!!
If XP needs 128 (256 to be smooth) You'd need at least 256 in the box and 512 to be sure.

Microsoft is expected to recommend that the "average" Longhorn PC feature a dual-core CPU running at 4 to 6GHz; a minimum of 2 gigs of RAM; up to a terabyte of storage; a 1 Gbit, built-in, Ethernet-wired port and an 802.11g wireless link; and a graphics processor that runs three times faster than those on the market today.

The system requirements might have come down a bit lately, they have started removing 'hard to get working" parts of Longhorn in order to have a new operating system to sell to us in the foreseeable future, and hope to update it at a later time if they get the harder parts working.

Like we don't have enough headache dealing with XP so far?
I suggest we (computer users) go on 'upgrade strike' for a while and stick to what we have as long as it works or at least as long as problems are manageable.
It is purely commercial to produce a new operating system every year or two. Better get the existing one to work correctly.
I have been working with Word professionally since the first versions. Every new version has added new problems rather than making a bug free version.
Gentlemen, all programmers know that more features = more bugs, so please cut it off; at least for a while.

While I agree with eman2005 I think that this latest o/s/ from Microsoft is an important one. As everyone can see from SP2, The Giant acquisition, new anti-virus product and other bits and pieces, Microsoft are taking Security very seriously. When Longhorn eventually releases expect a much more default secure system, they took a bit step towards this with Windows Server 2003 by reducing Startup services and other bits and pieces. It's just a shame that they have had to ditch the WinFS for longhorn.

WinFS will come, just not at first release.
It is not ditched, just postponed.
