long computer name

I have an exchange server who appears in network neighborhood with a really long name, instead of it's computer name, so it does not properly alphabetize the computer, making it difficult for users to find. Is there a way to change the name Exchange Server(ServerName) to just ServerName? Thanks.

What is the name that you are seeing?

If users are browsing to the server via My Network Places they should be viewing the server by it's NetBIOS name. Which happens to be the servers name.

To change it.

Right click on My Computer. Then choose properties form the window. Choose the Network Identification Tab and then choose the properties button. Change the name to the desired name and reboot and it should be changed.

It can take awhile for the change to showup in MY Network Places.

The NetBIOS name is what you are seeing in (). What is showing up first is the description that is assigned with the computer name. What OS is the server?

The Computer Name is NJServer, the FQDN is NJServer.domain.com, and it is displaying as Exchange Server/Data Server (NJServer)

The Server is Windows 2000 server, and the problem only seems to be happening on WindowsXP workstations. The Pre WinXP systems are only showing the NetBIOS Name

On the server go into computer management. Right click Computer Management (Local), select properties. Go to the Network ID tab, and look at the Description field. Is that the Text that is showing up in front of the computername in Network Places?

The Text here shows properly, and there is nothing in the description field. (odd?)

I think I have resolved it. When I went into Computer Manager from another server, and told it to connect to the other server the text in the description field was there. When connecting to it from the server in question that field was blank.
