I have a fellow office worker who is still on win98. She is having a problem with her nosey department director going on her computer when she is not around and reading her emails.

How do you set up a login pasword for win 98 so when she leaves her computer, the screensaver comes on, or the system goes to sleep? Then she has to log back in to view the desktop?

Sorry for the stupid question but I only have used 2000, xp and mac os's.

Thanks in advance,

You can set a password for the screensaver, what network are you connected to, is it just a Microsft Network.
Can you not set a password on her email account?

Unfortunately, Windows 95/98/ME all lack real security aside from setting policies which can be a real hassle if you've never done them before. A screensaver works fine while the PC is left on, but simply killing the power and restarting the PC gets around it.

I suggest you install a 3rd-party app to help force passwords to login at startup. I found this one at

Anyone that has physical access to the PC can probably find dozens of ways around this, but "some" security is better than none I suppose.
