Login failed Sql Server error 18452

I am trying to run SQL Server 2005 on XP Pro SP2. I have authentication set to SQL Server and Windows but it is behaving as if it is set to Windows only. I can connect with a windows account but not with a sql login account. I checked the registry setting for loginmode and it is set to 2

I get 'Login failed for user 'xxx'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.'

What's the trick?

Does you have any other instance of SQL Server running on this box (i.e. another 2005 instance like express or maybe an old SS2K instance)?
