Login and cookies

I'm developing a site that uses a login screen. This is all fine and no problem. However on the homepage I am looking for a similar approach to the Blackstar website(

http://www.blackstar.co.uk)

where it would display 'please login' as a link to the login page and '<username>' once the user has logged in.

As mentioned the login section is easy it's just the homepage I'm unfamilar on how to achieve this. I assume it is cookie based and includes some sort of if then statement.

Can someone give me some tips?

The ASPsite.org has a terrific list of ASP tutorials and downloads, use their search facility to trawl through several ASP sites, I found numerous sites that offered small login scripts similar to the type you're after.
