I am having problems with my domain, the domain controller is running windows 2000 server with all the service packs and updates. The problem that I am coming across is that when I start another PC up and try to log onto the domain it will log on as if it’s only logging on as a local user, if I then log off and log back on it will load onto the domain fine. The other PC’s on my network are all running win XP Pro with updates etc.

Has anyone got any ideas about this? [morning]

When logging on, do you get the option to choose the domain?

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Yeah the option is always there yet when I do select it to log onto the domain it still acts like it is logging on locally until I log off and log back on.

Are you using roaming profiles or mandatory profiles?

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

I have not configured the profiles to be saved anywhere, all I have selected on the user is that they are to have a shard drive (z:). Could this be the problem? Is so could you let me know what the best way to set up this user would be? E.g. the script that it should run and where is best to save the profile.

Thanks

Leigh

Haven't fogotten about you.

Cna you please define what you mean by the PC is logging on locally? If you have selected to log onto the Domain are you saying that it does not do that? How are you validating that? What is different after you log on the second time?

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Mark

Well the profile that I have set up has a shared drive set to it and the first time I log on it does not connect that drive, infact it does not even let me ping the server - so there can’t be any network established!!

What I mean by it seems like its logging on locally is that the options that you have when you log on there is the domain and then the computer, if you were to select the computer to log on with that would be a local login.

OK, so if you were to have just a file on the desktop for the network profile would that still show up?

This sounds more to me like a problem with either your persistent connection OR your network card is being managed by Advanced Power Management and is being turned off.

Check the properties of your NIC and click the Power Management tab. make sure there is no check next to Allow Windows To Turn Off This Device.

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Ok I have just checked this and im still having the same problems, im coming to the fact that it might be the switch of the other PC as I have re-built the server over the last few days and I am not running windows 2003 server, but the problem is still there. Could the switch be cutting the traffic to the server for the first time that you load the PC?

I suppose that is possible but more likely the problem is that your PC does nto yet know where to find the server. Are you running DNS? How is your NIC set for NetBIOS over TCP/IP? I'd set it to Allow NetBIOS over TCP/IP. I've seen lots of problems using the default to get the NetBIOS settings from the DHCP server.

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Are you using DHCP or Static IP Addresses?
Is the Server setup to allow the NIC to go to sleep?

I recommend you set Power Management on the Server to "Always On", then adjust the times for the HDD and NIC to "never" go to sleep. (Yes, you'd think that would be the default setting for "Always On", but in ultimate M$ Wisdom...)

Hey Seumas

Yeah I have already set all of this so that it will not go to sleep, I am now trying to work out how to set up NetBIOS properly. This is proving to be a problem as I don’t know how to do this

Any subjections or examples?

Thanks a lot for all of your help Mark and Seumas

Edit the TCP/IP Properties for your NIC. Click the Advanced button. CLick the WINS tab. Set it to Use NetBIOS Over TCP/IP.
