I'm having lock up problems after a BIOS flash. I'm thinking I might have a conflict somewhere, but can't locate any problem devices. My IRQ setting list 6 hardware devices using IRQ 11. They are: softK56 software modem, nVidia Riva TnT2 mod. 64 video card, SMC EZ card 10/100(NIC), VIA ac'97 audio controller,VIA USB universal host controller, and VIA USB universal host contoller. I've disabled the modem already-that leave 5 devices on IRQ 11. Does this sound OK? Thanks. jmtjet.

PS: Windows 2000 Pro. Was running good before the flash. Reason for flash: CMOS ROM checksum errors on boot.

Have you tried clearing the CMOS?
It not what you say but how you say it that counts...apparently.

Thanks for the replies, My next step is to clear the BIOS chip and re-flash. bgross22, I checked that link, that was my problem before the flash.I no longer have the error on boot, but now I get lock-ups and some other odd behavior-like some ad images don't some on some web pages??

after you flash
reassign the IRQ in the BIOS for the Video card.
windows 2k may still say IRQ 11 in the OS but the card WIll Be much Happier through the BIOS assignment

firewolfrl, I checked the BIOS, but can't find a parameter that will let me change the video card's IRQ. Under PnP/PCI Config. I've got "assgn IRQ for VGA" but the options are to "enable or Disable" (mine is set to enable) Also got "resources controlled by" "auto/manual" I tried selecting "manual" still unable to change video card to another IRQ. The BIOS are: Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG the flash came from esupport.com, and is K7VZA (6A6LME13) My advice concerning esupport: DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THESE GUYS totally no support with their flashes. Thanks for the help. jmtjet

My advice is to re-flash the bios. Go to the mobo board manufacturer website and get the latest... then flash and save all default settings, reboot and change your settings to what you want them to be. On changing the vid card IRQ set your bios for manual, then change the irq on PCI 1 , thats the AGP port, to a unique IRQ, Make sure you don't put any cards ion the PCI slot right next to the AGP. That's PCI 1 also. The other devices prolly don't have a problem sharing... Good luck.

I have a K7-series motherboard and I used the wrong BIOS at one time. Be VERY careful that you are using the proper BIOS.

I had a similar problem (different mobo). I solved the problem by disabling the onboard sound. There was conflict between my Gforce 4 and the Cmedia chip. I disabled the chip and installed a Soundblaster live card.

Any way ya look at it I would disable or remove everything that you can and start adding everything back in until you find the device causing the problem.

Also, I have found that you try the latest bios and then go backwards in time. The newest bios is not always the best for your system

Another thought for you. Make sure you are not enableing or select a PNP/OS. I know that W2K is considered a PNP OS BUT when this comes to the BIOS this means that it will not do any IRQ assignments, it will rely on Windows. The result may be that the video card forces itself to IRQ 11 and windows assigns all your other devices.

Also, make sure you have your chipset drivers installed.

Another thing you can check is go to your device manager and select view -> show hidden devices. This may reveal some other issues/conflicts.

Have a star Jamk555! I didn't realize there were hidden devices in Win2K. Curious, I looked at my list and a number of them were "gray" (not being installed) and one, Serial, had a yellow exclamation point. Now I need to figure out why...

Thanks for all your support, I did re-flash the BIOS with another flash utility and all was well until I decided to upgrade the driver(their recommended driver) for my Logitech mouse(USB optical)you guessed it-I crashed. I tried everything I could think of to repair Win 2K pro-no joy. Had to do an re-install. Luckyly, I had everything backed up,just took some time. I'm up and running with a few "minor" problems. I'm getting good at re-installs, I think I'm going to get a copy of DriveImage or GO-Back
