Hello,

I have a large database on a network server with approximately 20 people accessing it. The database was developed on a Windows NT Operating system in Access 97.

Until now the database has worked fine. Recently we had a new starter for which a new PC was purchased. This PC is connected to our network and is running Windows XP (Yes i know) and has both MS Access 97 and MS Access 2k installed. While both of these packagess work as expected on other databases there is still one database which persists in not working on this new pc. It is the only PC that is not working.

When trying to enter this Access 97 database we recieve the error message.

"The Microsoft Jet database engine stopped the process because you and another user are attempting to change the same data at the same time"

I have successfuly opened the database in Access 2k and works fine but this user needs to make design changes to the database.

Hope someone can help. I have changed all the record locking options and there is only the standard password protection on the database.

I'd have to assume this is XP Pro? Is the .mdb file physically located on the xp box--ie, do you have a 'design master' and copy the whole .mdb to each client pc? Or is this on a network server somewhere? Is the .mdb a single .mdb-with data and forms, etc, or is there a front-end/back-end .mdb?

I have seen this problem with a corrupted .mdb, and also with an XP Pro machine trying to open a front-end .mdb which was located on a Win2k server--via a vpn. This particular issue was solved when some vpn/router settings were changed, but it sounds like your's is a regular Lan.

I would run a Repair first, then try opening a copy (if the .mdb is currently located on the network) of the .mdb while it's on the xp box.

jsteph,

I believe that the OS is XP Pro.
The database is located on a networked server through the LAN.
The database is a single mdb in that all forms queries tables ..... are in the same file.

Have just repaired the a copy of the database and an currently compacting it. Will let you know if this resolved the problem.

Hi,

I have resolved this problem now. When i first tried to compact and repair the database in Access 97 it still did not work. However i used the Compact and Repair option within Access 2k on this database and it solved the problem.

Cheers for your help.
