LOCAL Windows Update

Once Win98 has passed away, I assume MS will remove the Windows Update section from its website as well. Like most of us I have downloaded all the Win98 patches in anticipation of this event. So now whenever I come across a PC that has never had a visit to the MS Update site, I can manually update them from my CD, which is a painfully slow process.

But what I would REALLY like is to be able to run the Windows Update routine and have it point to MY library of patches rather than the MS website.

Now here is an opportunity for some budding programmers to come up with a program that emulates the MS update routine by:-
examining the individual PC,
advising of a list of required patches to be installed,
give you the option to select from the list,
have them install in the correct order.

Does anyone know if there is any development along these lines going on, or if there is already some software available?

I believe MS already has one, I will check with my MCSE instructor for the exact app, but it used extensively in corporate america, to stop every machine in the company hoaging te internet link, you can download it free, I will get the link.

It only handles 2000, 2003 and xp, but as 98 has been phased out, we should be thankful for this

As I do PC support for a living, I am constantly having to deal with win98 machines, and I expect this will continue for some years yet. Many of these machines have never visited MS update, and Win98 is still a good OS as long as it is well maintained.

Because of the variety of machines and configurations (and I am sure I am not alone here!), a stand-alone update routine accessing my own collection of patches will make life a whole lot easier.
