Local root folder does not exist. 1

(I am new to Dreamweaver) I am having a problem with my local root folder.
when I open up Dreamweaver, I get a window that tells me that my local site folder (name of site) does not exist. When I open define sites and select the root folder, it opens it, creates a cache, then shows the site in the site window.
If I leave the site window, then go back to it, I get the "your local site folder does not exist message" all over again. This also happens every time I close and reopen the application.
Does anyone know what is going on? I asked a friend who uses this program all the time and he was perplexed. Thanks for you assistance!

What vs of DW and what OS?

Is the root folder located on a mapped network drive by any chance? How many characters in the path name? When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

There are 15 characters in the path name.
The root folder is on the hard drive of my ibook.
The ibook is networked with an imac. (although the network is not active at the moment).

Thanks for the help. Your questions pointed to the obvious answer: the path name includes the direction to the hard drive, which creates too many characters for Dreamweaver to recognize. I saw this in a faq before I posted my question and (duh) I didn't get it.
I cut the name down to the number of characters visible when I opened the site. This most perplexing problem disappeared and all is well.
