Loaded AOL v9 onto older PC with Win98 first edition and it is slow. The computer initially had AOL 4 and all was great up until we purchased a printer that required AOL 6 or greater to work. So whta do we do now? Should we remove AOL 9, then try to find AOL 6 or 7 and install that one? Does anyone know where to find that version to download? Thanks!!

BTW - the computer runs Windows 98 first edition, has 128mb ram and is a PII processor. I know it is old but it runs/ran good before AOL 9 was loaded.

Yes - uninstall 9.0 completely - reboot

start > settings > folder options > View tab
tick "Show All Files"
untick "hide ext for known file types"...

CTRL + F to FIND and "Look in" C:\ - tick "include subfolders" put in "Named" Aol*.*
Delete all found (except perhaps any saved gifs from d/l web pages or whatever, and also keep the 2 folders that it'll save during uninstall - such as organize or favs only if you want to)
But delete the AOLbak.exe (?) huge 25+MB backup file.
Empty all the Caches -> IE History, Cookies, Temporary Internet Files - also \WINDOWS Recent and Temp folders.

Reboot

I'd check the Recycling Bin too and empty it, but make sure you don't want anything else in there (same goes for TEMP folder).

If I were you I'd D/l and run RegClean for 9x (free) at this point - I use it all the time after an Uninstall...and it has an Undo function built in.

Reboot
Stop all unecessary tasks when installing any app
CTRL+ALT+DEL and use Task Manager to end all except EXPLORER and SYSTRAY...be patient, some may take 20 sec
Pop in AOL CD
Hold down Shift key for 10-15 sec when putting in AOL CD - this wil Bypass AutoRun.

Use Explorer to Browse the AOL CD for version 6.0 and run setup.

As I understand it, AOL 9 now includes a feature that enables you to connect to the internet without having to load that awful AOL browser - the AOL dialer I think they call it. I no longer use AOL for the same reasons you have experienced - enormous slow-downs in small computers, but it seems AOL have at least tried to address this problem now.
Maybe that is the solution you are looking for?
