When should I be using list trace? is it useful? I'm having a hard time finding docs for it.

list trace is a *very* basic version of those MST traces you pay Avaya to perform. It can give a look into what PBX software is doing as it routes calls from stations, across trunks, and through VDNs.

For instance, if you have a user who receives a denial tone when performing an action, or are having issues routing a call over a trunk, you would use list trace to get a clue as to why those things are happening.

Documentation for the list trace command is present in the Maintenace manual for your PBX in the 'maintenance commands' section.

For example:

Your station is a member of hunt groups, is a point in coverage paths and so on.

list usage EXT will result in all usage of desired extension in the PBX.

Hope this helps

One thing to note is that you can only use list trace from the SAT or from terminal emulation so you obtain real time data. I use it to see what digits are actually being sent, or how a call is routed and what trunk group and member it is on. Great for testing new route patterns. On a IP station it displays a lot more info, such as ip address and codec, and ip statistics such as jitter and packet loss.

It's also useful to see who's calling a particular station if you don't have caller id or call accounting, though it times out after a while.

Over all it's one of the most useful troubleshooting tools I use.

ops, i missed the point, list trace insted of list usage.

sorry
