Hi there friends,

I am very new to linux. I have just successfully installed the linux OS redhat 9. When the first time I rebooted the system, the system is not booting up. It halts or hangs at the following:

Initializing RT netlink socket
apm: BIOS version 1.2 flags 0x03 (driver version 1.16)

Please help me shed some lights on this issue to solve the problem.

Thanks a lot.

When the system doesn't boot, you can try booting into runlevel 1 or single user mode. When the GRUB prompt appears, type 'e' to edit the line that starts with "kernel". Move to the end of the line and type <space>s. The line will look something like this after you edit it...

kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.20-9 ro root=LABEL=/ s

Type <enter> and then 'b' to boot from the modified GRUB stanza.

Examine the output of "dmesg | less" for error messages. Also look at "less /var/log/messages" and "less /var/log/boot.log".

Since the last thing you saw was "apm...", try disabling apm by typing "chkconfig apm off".

Hi there,

I tried the following when I boot up the linux.

Added to the kernal parameters the following:

apm=off

Finally I was able to login smoothly.

I understand that we can also use apm=idle_threshold=100

got this trick from

I will try your method also. Actually I do not understand the meaning of the above parameter. I need to learn latter.

APM = Advanced Power Management

It's very unuseful with server but with normal Workstations it can save some energy by turning off stuff when it's not used (like HD/Monitor etc)
