Does anyone know what I need to do to be able to load the Oracle 8i Client on Redhat Linux? First, where do I get the client software-I can get the full blown Oracle DB but I do not want that-and then what do I do to install it.

The client is included as part of the full installation.

I've never seen it available on its own.

Oracle makes the assumption that you will need the databse if you have the client, as its not much good for connectiong to anything else. :)

Thanks. I have the database on another machine. What I want is the client on my laptop so I can run SQL*PLUS, Pro-C, etc. Have you successfully installed it on Linux?

How did you get on installing oracle client on linux? I'm having problems doing this - the install hangs on the last part NET8 configuration assistant? any ideas

Still have not done it. I am trying to install 9i now. Oracle now has a Linux version of 9i

Oracle for Linux (tarball) can be downloaded from Technet (don't know exact URL off top of my head). Just specify client instead of server when installing.

I think the Net8 assistant hanging is a glibc version problem (I'm a SuSE guy personally but have seen same behavior). abort the Net8 assistant, apply the setup_stubs.sh patch (search MetaLink) and manually configure your sqlnet.ora, tnsnames.ora, etc.
