Links in Excel 97 1

using Excel 97 SR2

Once a file is linked to another (formulas referencing another sheet) are the links permenant?

I have a couple of reports that from month to month reference a different sheet, but when you click on Edit-Links the links used in the past are still active even if they are no longer linked in any formulas.

Is there any way to kill the old links?
