i have a laptop and on my old desktop there are files and such that i want to transfer to the new comp.

my friend told me that if i connect a ethernet cable to each, i can set up a new network and this will allow me to effectively see what is on the desktop.

however, i have tried to no avail. any ideas? both comps have win2k.

The cable your friend refered to is a cross over cable. Its almost the same as a standard cable except the internal layout in the plugs is a little different

i believe he said he had a regular ethernet cable used from a high speed inet modem to the comp.

that's what i have. a regular yellow ethernet cable. what can i do with what i have to accomplish my goal?

okay, so i have the crossover cable. now what steps do i do?

ok...thanks for the help.

what i did was go online and found that a crossover cable (good call) is simply an ethernet cable with two of the wires crossed. so i took my 'new' ethernet cable and was able to see the other computer.

thanks again.
