linked excel chart in access report won't update unless excel is open 1

Data and chart are in Excel, chart was copied and paste special-link into an Access report. If the data is changed in Excel, saved and closed, the chart in the Access report does not reflect the changes. If the workbook is open, the chart in the Access report DOES reflect the changes. How can Access be made to reflect the changes without the workbook being open?

Don't use copy and paste but instead use the menu Insert,
menu-option Object. Then select the workbook containing the chart and check the link box.

This will insert your chart as an OLE (object linking and embedding) object, assuring it will be updated whenever you update it in Excel.
