I give in with this ADSL lark ...

I've tried to configure my ADSL WIC card in a 1751 router but no sucess and I think there's only a few minor point wrong.

On the back of the WIC card the CD and OK lights are both green, the SLOT1 LED on the front flickers green when it feel like but still no traffic! If I do a show int of all my interfaces the Virtual-Access interface shows line protocol is down

Here's my config - if anybody can see anything wrong then I'll owe them a beer or two!

I understand what you were doing. I wasn't really paying attention to the ACLs. I was just trying to make the point to TalentedFool that making these changes would not affect his immediate problems.

Too often, people troubleshoot above the layer that is causing them problems and wonder why there is no effect.

Since this site is here to "teach" (or at least partially), i like to explain what effect the changes someone makes would have.

That is why i wanted him to change the VPI as well, by doing thatwe have essentially eliminated layer 1 as a problem. Or at least layer 1 variables that are controllable locally.

I agree completely. I've seen too many people get frustrated and start flailing instead of eliminating causes systematically following OSI. Since all the upper layers ride on the lower ones, issues at the bottom often get treated by solutions at the higher layers with no success. We're definitely on the same page!

Speaking to the BT engineer this morning, he told me that he's not allowed to tell me but it can go up to 60db before it becomes a problem.

I've just spoken to my ISP as well and (how they've done this I do not know) they have confirmed that they are seeing traffic come from us but it's not getting to their part of the network curcuit so they are going to talk to BT about it again!

So that probably means another week before I get any response from them!

The attenuation and noise do seem high, though. Are phones on the line? Are they filtered? Any bridge taps or loading coils in the local loop?

OK guys, had ISP on the phone this morning - still no joy!

One thing I will say though is that I dont' think I'm NAT'ing correctly!! for my Sat Broadband conection I do all the hard work on my firewall. I'm going on the internet under say 198.168.193.18 for my working connection. If on my router I try and NAT this address to go via my ADSL I can still get out on the internet ?

I've got this .. I've added the top line this morning to try and test this...

when I get out on the internet and go to whatsmyip.com it comes up with 198.168.193.18

Am I doing something wrong here or does this just not happen?

As you know I have two internet connections. the ADSL which is the headache and a brodband connection which works perfectly.

To try and test the ADSL with my ISP they asked me if I could try and connect and get some traffic down the ADSL line. I thought the easiest way for me to try this would be to send all my internet traffic down the ADSL line (only HTTP and not any SMTP or FTP). If someone wants to browse the net I NAT everything on my firewall to 198.168.193.18 (SMTP and FTP are on .193.19 and .193.20 respectively)

So I thought on the router I would NAT the 198.168.193.18 broadband address to an ADSL address of 172.30.7.228 and throw that down the ADSL pipe.

My NAT looks like

ip nat inside source static 10.10.1.5 172.30.7.227

My routing looks like

ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 198.168.194.241
ip route 172.30.7.0 255.255.255.0 172.30.7.224

At present I can't change the default route due to business working times etc.

Now, when I go to

it comes up with 198.168.193.18

Is that 'cause of the routes or am I NATing wrong? Do I need extendable on the end or is this not going to work due to the ADSL not working ?

It sounds like what you need to use is a route map to get an extended translation. When the nat first occurs, the address resolves to the 198.168.193.18 address. That is what the nat table shows. Since your other route is going out another interface, you need to resolve to another ip address for the 172.30.7.0 network. I'm tied up in a class week so have limited time to respond, but check out nat with route maps. I think that's what you're looking for based on the information given.

OK cool, I think somebody mentioned route maps before but they looked like something I didn't need! Will check them out!

My next question - default gateways

if I put in ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 Dialer1 and do a show ip route I get Gateway of last resort is 0.0.0.0 to network 0.0.0.0

Dialer1 is configured as

ip address 198.168.7.225 255.255.255.252

The IP address assignment I've got is 198.168.224/28 from my ISP

Have I done something wrong here ? I mean, if I can't get to a gateway then I can't get out - ISP says that there is nothing wrong their end - so they think but are still looking into things - so this might be a problem maybe ?

Hold everything!!! My ISP has come back to me this morning and told me to try the connection acuse they can ping me! So I tried it and it works!!

Basically they went away and re-provisioned the line over night - so it was their end all the time!!

Still got a problem with ip route though not putting the traffic where I want it but I think I'll have a good search for that and maybe open up another posting.
