In a nutshell, as you start dialing for an outbound call on line 5 it makes a 'DEAD' tone.

We have a Norstar system with max 6 lines and 8 extensions.

I have added the 5th line to the system after a period without it. It has a different number to the rest to allow outbound calls. We dont advertise the number, it is for outbound calls only.

Before I removed the line 3 months ago I made a note of all administrator and configuration settings. Now I have reconnected the phone cable and resurrected the settings, the line will allow calls inbound fine.

I think this sounds like a permissions thing within the phone system, but I cant find any suitable setting in the configuration menu.

Any clues?

Thanks guys.

where did u punch down the 5th line? - wiring details in the FAQ
what kind of system
line 5 - can u call and get an incoming call

Inbound calls are fine.

Re wiring, I copied lines 1-4, only using two wires from the inbound line supplied by BT.

I can see that putting Line 5 onto PoolB will make 9 pick up the line.

Setting Line 5 to Appear & Ring will turn on the 5th button.

I wasn't sure if I needed to change the line Pool Access on each extension to say Line Pool B: Y. This setting doesn't seem to make any difference.

Perhaps the Line Pool Codes in Miscelaneous make a difference?

Sorry - I'm not a phone engineer! I'm just trying to get us out of trouble!

Thanks a lot for helping...

setting it tp appr/ring and press the button, if there is no dialtone
you need to check the line in the phone closet

or it may be line 31 to boot depending on software version

6 months until ski season starts...sadly i must resign myself to the warmer weather"this will include a normal 8-5 work day, 5 days a week"

Thanks for all the tips.

There is a dial tone, its not until you start dialing a number that is makes a solid TONE (not silence).

When I removed the line (we moved premesis) it was definately line 5, the other lines are 1 2 3 and 4.

System version is SP: 30nAH07 DR5

This is not related to the 'restrictions' menu, as that says 'restricted' as soon as the number is dialed.

What would the affect of the two incomming cables being inserted the wrong way around?

Any additional tips would be appreciated!

Thanks

FAULT FOUND!

I dont know how common this is, but the problem was with BT!

The line added to line 5 of the switchboard is one of a pair of 'Feature Lines', so calls can be transferred between two normal land lines without a switchboard.

The two phones are extension 20 and 21, so you can make calls between the two land lines free of charge.

To make outgoing calls on a feature line, you need to press 9!

As a result, to use line 5 we will need to press 9 twice!

(A colleague pointed out that to dial the emergency services would require 99 999!)

Thanks for everyones help, it appears that the switchboard is set up and operating as it should.
