I am using MS Access 2000 and developing a simple query. I am having trouble with the results from using the Like function.

In my query I have typed ' Like "PAID*" ' into the Criteria box to get all records that have the word PAID at the start of a particular text field. However, my output also includes records that have this field with "UNPAID BREAK" at the start of its contents.

I'm confused. Why am I getting these records? Why is it giving me records that do not have the just the word "PAID" at the start of the field?

Is this a bug in Access? Is there something I should check about the field's characteristics or properties? What is causing this anamoly?

With the * before PAID you are including ALL records which contain the PAID keyword. Try just searching for PAID*

That should do it for you.

Hope this helps

I swear first time I read that post it had a * before PAID*.

Hmm, dodgy eyesight methinks...[bugeyed]

Paul,

You've most likely already tried this, but sometimes it has worked for me (with the unfortunate side effect of never knowing exactly what the problem was to begin with).

My settings are such that when I TAB to a field it highlights the whole field. If yours is the same, TAB to the problem criteria and just start from scratch: type [blue]Like Paid*[/blue] and TAB to the next criteria field (Access will add the appropriate quote marks). You may also want to use the arrow keys to descend vertically from your problem criteria and clean out any OR criteria.

One-in-a-million that this helps, but I had two cents burning a hole in my pocket...

Good luck!
Tim
