I am very confused when it’s about Microsoft Licensing.

If I have 5 Servers running W2K Server, How many copies of Server do I need to buy and/or if I have 500 users licensing per server do I need anything else?

Same thing for Exchange 2000. What licenses do I need to buy if I have 300 mailboxes on that server?

Thanks

You're talking about several different licenses. First you need 5 licenses of Windows 2000 Server. Net you need 500 Client Access Licenses (CALs) for your workstation. Every workstation that connects to a server will need a CAL. The servers all need to be in Per Seat licensing mode. If you have them in Per Server you could need as many as 2500 CALs. For Exchange you will need a license for each mailbox. Hope this helps.

Yes it did thanks, Let me be more specific so I can understand the differences between per seat and per server.

I have 2 DC’s, 2 file servers and an Exchange server running W2K server.
I have 132 mailboxes on exchange and about 200 users logging into the domain.

Should I go per server or per seat? I heard that we should always go with per server. Is it true?

Thanks
