Hi all,
I need general advice here, the more the better. My company is going to upgrade our Windows NT Server to Win2k Server. The Windows NT Server currently has 10 CAL installed on it. We've moved to a new building and now have 50 users. My plan is this: I'm going to purchase Windows 2000 Server Version Upgrade (With 25 Client Access Licenses) and an additional license pack of 20. I've got a book on Win2K I am reading on how to admin NT but I'd be greatful if anyone has some beginners advice...obvious mistakes to avoid, etc... Now I'm assuming that the 10 CAL's I currently have will transfer over...is that correct?

That's that from a licensing point of view, currently my network has an application server (Unix) otherwise we are P2P with mostly 98SE machines, there are 2 win2k professional machines. What kind of things can I expect to happen when I throw the server on the network. I'm sure there are a lot of other things I should tell you about the setup, so if I left them out please ask. (There is a lot I don't know here-- but I'm trying)

If your CALs are per seat then you can definitely just move them across as the licences are associated with the desktops rather than the servers (meaning you can access as many servers as you like from each desktop providing that desktop has a CAL) If they are per server I wouldn't like to say. Things to look out for are Active Directory. If you aren't prepared to implement it then don't do it just now wait until you've had time to get used to 2Ks quirks before you just go for it. Other things are ensuring you have all the latest security patches on the servers. Using the windows update shortcut doesn't list all available patches I've know it to claim that I need a patch which I know is already installed while not listing a critical patch that isn't. Don't rely on it! Make sure the kit is on the hardware compatibility list for win2k and before you install apply all the latest bios updates you can get and download all the latest drivers. The ones that ship normally work but i've known them to cause problems. Finally if it's your first install of 2000 do it slowly make sure you know exactly what you are installing at each stage. It tries to force a few things on you that you may not want and which can open more security holes. Let me know if this is any help
