Hi all,
When I setup NetWare 6.5 I used the demo license. Later I installed an Academic 250 user license. Now I am getting an error message every 15 minutes showing the server license expired for Novell NetWare 6 Server 650.

When I generate License Reports I get this window ....
__________________________________________________________
Novell Licensing Services

Product License Containers In Use Installed Usage
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Novell+NetWare 6 Acad Users+650 0 250 0.0%
MSD (organization level) 0 250 0.0%
Novell+NetWare 6 Server+650 0 1000 0.0%
Williamsport (OU) 0 1000 0.0%
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Should I delete the server license showing 1000 users? I think that was the demo? I found it under the Williamsport branch of the tree in NWAdmin. Do I just delete it?
Also, the 250 user license is now at the top of the tree, the "O" (organization) level and the 1000 is at an "OU" (organizational unit) level. Should the 250 be at the "O" or "OU" level?

Do I need a server license or just the 250 user license?

Quite confusing.

Thanks for any help,

Make sure you've uninstalled the eval licenses.

You need both the server and user licenses.
One problem I see is that your license units aren't being consumed. This means it's not setup properly. You can also probably verify this by doing a VERSION at the console. You'll get something like "SERVER LICENSE NOT ACQUIRED".

If this is the case, you need to go rework all of your licensing stuff. Sometimes it's easiest to delete all the licensing objects out of the tree and redo it from scratch. Recreate the NLS Licensing object with SETUPNLS on the server, then reinstall the licenses with NWADMIN into the container that you want them.

Troubleshoot any further issues from there.

Another question about licensing. I am updating to Netware 6.5 and have 2 servers in the same tree. Server A has up to 700 user logins. Server B has up to 200 user logins. They each authenticate to the other server for file use. If someone logs into server A will they take a license on server B as well? If so, can I use the same license file on both server A and server B in the same tree? I am not sure where to put the 4-250 licenses I have. Thanks.

CaptKirk,
Novell's new licensing is by user account that actually logs into the tree and the server license is free and yes you do need a server license. So, the question is really how your eDirectory tree is setup that will determine where the user licenses comes from.

With NW 6.5 it really doesn't matter what server you are logging into because licensing is not by connection anymore and those connecting to server A and B will only consume 1 user license.

I would agree with Marvin and redo the licensing. I would put them in the tree where your user objects can get to them.

You might also download the Novell licensing document from their documentation site -
This has a lot of good info.
