legato restore question

Well, i think you might misunderstand and mix the functionatities of NW server and clients:
- You can not recover TO a UNIX (a NW client)
This would be a cross-platform recovery and it is not possible.
- You can recover to another windows client an initiate it FROM a NW cliuent for UNIX
This would be a so-called directed recovery.
- If you want to move the tape to a UNIX NW server,
Chacalinc is right - in this case you must scann the media in the other 'Data zone'.
- You can not recover TO a UNIX (a NW client)
This would be a cross-platform recovery and it is not possible.

Can it be done the other way? when moving from HP-UX Networker SERVER (not client) to Windows 2003 server?
I have Legato server running on HP-UX. I'm checking the possibility to move from HP-UX to windows 2003 as the Legato server platform.
If I'll need to perform an old restore (from the HP-UX server), can I scan the tape into from the Windows server, and then run the restore? or there is a "cluster-size" issue, or maybe other issue I'm not aware of?

if you have a compatible device installed, you may scan the tape of course.
However, this capability does not allow you to recover/restore the data to anything else but a UNIX/Linux computer. The simple reason is that such "cross-platform recoveries" are not supported.
This is more a security rather than a technical limitation. Generally, it would be possible to get the data itself back. But what about the rights and the ACLs - They are almost impossible to "translate", i think.
I have been told that cross-platform recoveries have not been implemented due to the fact that you otherwise could easily get access to data which usually is not possible due to the internal security issues.

Hi,
Thank you both (Chacalinc and 605), I'm only want to change the LEgato server platform. The restore of the client will be done to a client with the same OS as the one who was backed up originaly.
So I understand there shouldn't be any problem.
Please correct me if I misunderstood.

Hi all,
I think there are more points to view in this scenario.
1. To scan in the tape to an other server is the need the clients for the savesets on it exists in the new datazone
--> additional client licenses are needed.
2. Make sure the default blocksize on both networker servers is the same. If not you would not be able to restore the savesets nor the files on the scanned tapes.
3. to change the networker platform completely there is a
way (not supported by networker but it works) --> install
NetWorker on the new system shut down NetWorker daemons
make a ftp connection to the source NW Server set "bin"
and "get" the database folders (mm index nsr)into the newtworker nsr directory.
(zip unzip the db folders will be needed)
start the daemons and WONDER it should work.
REMEMBER: IT IS NOT EMC² NETWORKER SUPPORTED BUT MOSTLY IT WORKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You must create the client. To do this, NW must be able to resolve the previous hostname. But a fake in /etc/hosts will do the job.
As you recover only, you do not need a client license. NW only assigns a license with the first backup.

The FTP method will ONLY work for the same 'CPU type family'. Using this method, they must work the same way: either big endian or little endian - you can transfer from one 'direction' to the other. Windows to UNIX will simply NOT work.

Moving between platforms is NOT a host transfer - you need new licenses. However, for recovery only, i would install the new machine in eval mode. After the license expires, it should still be able to do recoveries.
