Learning XML, XML in textarea

I have been bashing this around for a number of days now.

What I have is a database with a content field. The content field has XML in it. I want to display the content in the textarea using the XSL template. Then I want to be able to press a button and see the XML.
All this for edditing a page....

I have tried creating XML files on the fly but this does not work for me, as I cannot save the new XML back to the database.

I have two questions
Is this possible?
and how?
