I am trying to implement a Nortel VOIP solution over a Cisco data network. We are having excessive jitter and latency issues. All the voice is staying on a layer 2 network. We have 3550 at the access layer, 4006 at the distrubtion layer and 6500 at the core. The 4006 and the 6500 are running CatOS and the 6500 has a MPLS card in it running IOS. All access switches have gig uplinks to the distribution and the distribution has gig uplinks to the core. Many of the phones are pluged into dot 1 q trunks which trunk the vlan of the computer and the phone down one link. I have noticed with a sniffer I see excessive traffic on any port trunked with vlan 1 which is the main data vlan. This vlan is class b and probably has at least 1000 computers on it. I feel this is the root problem but can layer 2 qos overcome this issue? The phones are marking controll packets with 40 and voice packets with 46 and both with a ip precedence of 5. I also would like some advice on the configs with the qos on these switches and also any debug commands to show if it is actually working.
