I'm in need of a way to kick off application (A) from a desktop application (B) and have application (A) run ON the server it resides and not the machine application (B) is running on. Both Apps are VB .NET applications running on windows 2000 servers. Application (A) requires no user interaction and must run on our MSSQL Server.

I thought about trying to port this app to a service but, management isn't willing to try that at this point.

Would there be a way for you to call the job from a proc on the SQL server. Then you could execute that proc from any location and the job would actually then run on the SQL Server... just a thought :)

I thought about that first but, the procedure just hangs. I've screwing with VB .NET and WMI but, can't seem to get it working that way either. I'm having trouble finding anything on WMI and VB .NET for this.

HyperRon, you may be better of asking in the VB.NET forum796

I like bjd4jc's idea - could you try firing the procedure with the xp_cmdshell extended stored procedure?

i tried that and it just hangs. i've been researching how to accomplish this using WMI but, I can't find any .NET references and have not gotten a response from my post in the VB.NET forum yet. Thanks for all the help :)

I have had hang with xp_cmdshell before (but using MSDE under Windows 98). I ended up raising an MSDN incident with Microsoft. It was down to the fact that Norton Anti-virus auto-protect was enabled. Once disabled, it worked OK. Hope you reach a resolution faster and with less pain than I did!
