Latest Updates for Windows

Hi folks,
I've just installed all the patches from the microsoft site, including an nVidia driver update. The result - my monitor resolution was completely screwed up and I couldn't adjust it back to the correct resolution. It was like running in Safe Mode. I had to do a restore to correct things.
I guess it may have been the nVidia driver.So be wary if you decide to install the latest security patches, which seems sensible.
I'm going to try again without the nVidia update and see what happens. Wish me luck!
Has anyone got any comments to make please? Thanks

If it still isnt working reinstall the nVidia driver.

Howdy,

I'm a bit wary of the Windows XP driver downloads from Windows Update myself. I tried the nVidia one which screwed up the graphics and I tried D-Link Wireless NIC driver which screws up D-Link's configuration utility.

I tend to stick with the manufacturers drivers and not Microsoft's downloads.

The manufacturers drivers are generally more reliable from my expereince as well.

Thanks for your comments. I reinstalled just the security patches and everthing was fine.

The driver updates are just recommendations, and my sympathies lie with others above who do not install device driver recommendations of the Windows Update service.

To be fair, this is not really Microsoft's fault. There should be an unambiguous GUID code for every device registered so that the site can vector to an appopriate WHQL certified driver. This is where the process breaks down.

Ignore any driver update recommendation from Windows Update. The process is too uncertain, prone to corner cutting by the device manufacturers to achieve WHQL certification, and just simply problematic. In most cases follow the dictum: "If your device is not broken, do not fix it."
