Since last Thursday (9/18) I have been receiving about 30-40 emails a day about either a supposed "critical patch" or a message describing that some messages was undeliverable to somewhere.

The attachments are removed at our firewall, and undoubtedly contain a virus and not an MS patch as the message states - MS never sends out patches in email.

But these messages are filling my inbox - I've never had a problem like this in the past. Is anyone else having this problem? I may have to break down and buy some spam filtering software - but this might be hard to sell to management, because at this point, I seem to be the only affected user.

I have been seeing it also. It is not just Spam, it does contain a worm, Worm.Automat.AHB. We use Norton Security Gateway to block Spam, but I've seen about the same number of these getting blocked as you say you are receiving.
Anyways, it's not just you...[smile]

Thanks,
