Hi,

Every now and again we have this issues. We have set send/receive limits on all users mailbox profiles.

Sometimes we have an issue where an extremely large e-mail floods the lines. We can see on our network monitoring tool that it is coming from the outside world and hitting our exchange box. The line peaks for most of the day. I eventually tried rebooting the server. The dropped for a while and then started climbing again.

We calculated that the e-mail must be over 100MB in size. The max a user can receive is 10MB. (senior managers)

How can exchange even allow such a huge connection if none of the users are able to retrieve it. (I suspect that exchange has to receive the entire e-mail before verifiying if the user can in fact receive the file)

How can one combat this or even stop the connection while it is happening? I have even tried using message tracking in exch 2000 to see what user is receiving the file.

Any ideas?

Julian

Personally, i use a linux gateway with postfix. After Postfix does some spam and virus checks, it passes the message to the Exchange server. The Exchange server then does more spam and virus checks then delivers to the appropriate mailbox.

We use mailmarshall and a SPAM system at the headoffice. This controls the incoming mail.

I need info on how to terminate an open connection to the exchange server if it is overloading the line.

You could discard the mail at the mailmarshal server.
