Looking for help from Multi Vantage Engineers. We are an Avaya BP for IP Office. We have never dealt with Multi Vantge or Definity but we are lokking for a bigger system than the IP Office for our portfolio. We currently have the following requirement wich the IPO can't do. Can the Multi Vantage??

The customer who presently has an Ericsson BP250 system. They have about 160 users presently and want to give every user a twinned DECT phone along side thier desk phone. This is beyond the BP250.

So we need 160 Digital/Alog phones and 160 DECT.

For the IPO the IP DECT will only do 120 DECT phones. The 1500 (Kirk DCU) will do 128 phones. Unless the customer decides to reduce the number of cordless then neither of these will do. I am also told Avaya are going to stop supporting the Kirk DCU 1500.

The Spectralink WiFi is something I know very little about. From reading the docs it looks like it will cope with plenty of phones but then we can only have 60 VCM channels max in the IPO (which might be enough).

The other consideration is physical position of base stations. My understanding of WiFi access points is that we can adjust the channel numbers of AP's located near each other to reduce collitions between AP's. Though this many 2.4Ghz AP's together sounds like trouble!!!

I also know DECT base stations close together can cause issues, so lots of calls on one base station would be good.

This is a standard 7 storey office building with a large number of phones in a resonably small space. I have warned the salesman about having lots of base stations too close together and he doesn't want to listen, he just wants the sale!!!! I think we should just about get away with 11 DECT base stations in the building spread evenly over the 7 floors. Using IP DECT that is 88 calls accross the building which should be fine.


Any thoughts on this would be greatly accepted.

I have also heard about a DECT system that connects via PRI QSIQ but I don't see how we can twin DECT/desk using that QSIQ.

The other consideration is Engineer training on the Multi Vantage. Is it too much to ask for me to get to a point to be able in install this solution having never worked it and what courses would I need. I have worked on various systems (Avaya INDeX/IPO, Siemens Hicom/Hipath, Alcatel OmniPCX Office, Panasonic(Who hasn't!!!) plus others) but nothing as big as he ACM.

Any opinions would be much appreciated!!

go with communication manager platform. i think in your case a small one will be enough, something like s8400. the dect system that avaya sells for definity (or cm, who cares) has capacity sufficient for huge dect networks, so 160 phones it will do without any problem.
as for desk/dect integration, it's no problem using x-mobile features that should be purchased with dect in any case.
and training, yes definity/cm does differ a lot from ip office, it's a completely different system, but definity always had an "easy-to-learn" air about it. take a look at you should be able to find training center near you.

there seems to be a lot of training for the Comms Manager. So it would depend on how much it is going to cost to get enough training and how many we woud sell in the future.

What is the difference between Comms Manager and MultiVantage??

yes, there's a lot of training courses on cm and related products. but you don't need all of them to get going, if you pass "simplex" curriculum you'll be fine. note that most of the courses are web-based and cheap so your company definitely can afford it.
there's no difference between cm and mv. up to release 10 this product was called "definity", then in r10-r11 it was renamed to "multivantage" and after releasing r11 they decided to change the name once again and it became "communication manager". never mind, it always will be definity for us old timers. :)
