Help. I recently was given an old Toshiba Satellite Pro 480CDT, P233. I upgraded the RAM from 32MB to 160MB. I wiped the drive clean, installed NT4.0 and SP6a, then upgraded to W2000 and SP2. I installed Sound and Video drivers. I went to Microsoft's website and installed all the critical updates and patches and some recommended updates for W2000. I installed common applications like OfficeXP, WinZIP, Acrobat, EZ CD Creator4. Everything was working fine for a while. I didn't change anything that I can recall, but now the computer won't shut down. I go through the usual shut-down process, and it starts to shut down, but then it goes to a dark screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner. Pressing any key has no effect on the cursor, and it stays that way until I hit the Power switch. When I reboot, it seems to come back on ok, but everything runs very slowly, and sometimes not at all when I click on an icon. I think something has captured the Memory and won't release it, but I'm not sure.
Does anyone have any ideas on this?

Check to see if you have any device conflicts.

Right click "My Computer" then "Properties", then "Hardware", then "Device Manager".

Look for anything with an Exclamation point or "X" on it.

Bill.

Possibly an APM issue. Look in the BIOS and verify that APM is enabled. Let me know

I had this same issue at work when I installed a piece of encryption software. i re-installed SP2 and it took care of the issue. Try this, it might be an easy fix. Laterz
