I gave a laptop to a buddy and now he called me with this problem.

The battery ran out of juice and the computer turned off. Now the computer does not respond to the power button.

Is there some way to check to see if it is just the button?

Unplug the machine from AC power.
Remove the battery.
Plug into AC power.
Turn it on.
Re-insert the battery.

Check the power supply transformer, it's the thing on the AC power cable sitting right between the wall and the Laptop. If it's working it should heat up. If it stays cold it could be the problem.

I removed all components from the system. Modem, cd, memory, battery, and hard drive. I plugged it in and hit the power button and the fan mainboard and fan powered on. I re-inserted all components and the system is running fine.
