I have a new dell laptop that has built in wireless nic card. Our office is totally wireless, when not in office, laptop will boot up to desktop and freezes with no icons. I can not do the Ctrl/Alt/Del. i have to hard power cycle it. Bring it back into our wireless zone and it boots normal. Please help!!

Hi,
Maybe there is some security set that checks for the presence of the network..Ask your support folks ..

The following can be considered a risky approach but I like taking risks. Dont know about you.

That seems to be a strange problem. Since the symptoms show this is a wireless problem how about if you disable the wireless card on the laptop when you are logged on in office. then switch off the laptop. Now take it out of the office and start it up again. See if it lets you start up the machine now.

beware , when you want to get back on the network , you might have to start up the laptop , enable the wireless card, and then restart to get back on the office network.

It might not be locking up, just waiting (seemingly) forever for a DHCP server response.

If you set a static IP for the wireless card, does the problem go away?

i also wonder if the laptop is set up for roaming profiles? seems unlikely, but maybe....

also- the wireless adapter can usually be disabled via a function key sequence, sometimes FN+F2. so disabling it before shutting down in the offfice or using the key sequence during bootup out of the office can temporarily alleviate the problem.

i would suggest if your office has local techs, i would urge them to work on this for you
