Laptop display not even comming on

I've got a problem with a laptop.

I'm a bit new with laptops so even the most obvious answer/questions Please post.

When I turn the laptop on it turns on okay. I can hear the fan. But there is no display. Its just black I get nothing at all not even POST.

OS is xp.

Did you buy it new becuse it sounds like to me that the screen is cooked.

Yeah its new.

Are there any other possiblilities?

Actually, with no display and no post I'd suspect the problem is far more grave. First thing to do is yank the battery and see if it will start with just the line power connected. If yes, bad battery or regulator. If no, fried system board (or some component thereon). Either way since it is brand new, go back for a warranty repair/replacement.

what kind of laptop is it old? did it used to work?

you sure you dont have it on the external monitor setting? try hooking up a external monitor to it see anything?

I think fatesWebb might be right. Most laptops have special function buttons on the keyboard to switch between the LCD, external display, both or none at all. Try looking up your documentation to see if it mentions this
