My son's lap top it works somewhat only in safe mode only and I am unable to back up his files on an external hard drive like i always did. Is there anyother way without removing the hard drive?

Since it does not operate in normal mode, if I reinstall the xp operating system, his old files will be still there safe?

When I open the back to replace its hard drive, I cannot find it. It seem like the hard drive is installed right below the keyboads and need special screw driver to open it.
Where can i find this tool?. I have two computer repair kits
non of them has this screw driver. What isisyour solution for this?

Since the XP operating system is a home version, I do not know how to resacue to a previoes working event!

Thank you in advance.

I wouldn't recommend opening the laptop and replacing the hard drive.

If you press the function key F8 at boot up then you should get some options. Try 'Last known good configuration"

If you install XP on top of XP - that is DO NOT format the drive. then data is saved - but you lose all microsoft updates & patches.

But you don't say what the symptoms are when you try to boot normally - so I can't help you further.

You may have picked up a virus - In which case you need to scan for virus's in safe mode - there is plenty of advice on tek-tips on how to do that.
