LAN Netbios Name Resolution

Hello

I am in the process of connecting 40 PC's to a NT4 Exchange server 5.5 using Outlook 2000.

All of the Win NT and Win 2000 pro machines find the server almost instantly during the set-up but I have a problem with the Win9x clients, a lot of these machines have been timeing out whilst trying to find the server (default 30 sec), I have tried using the server IP and this works during the set-up, but when I try to launch Outlook I still get the timeout problem and a messgae pops up saying that the Exchange server is unavailable.

The Exchange server is a NT4 BDC, all of the machines are on the same local domain and use DHCP for addresses and WINS.

Does anyone know what might be causing these problems?

can you ping the Exchange server by name and IP Address?

IE

PING EXCHANGE

and

PING 192.168.1.100

I bet you have DNS entries in your tcp/ip properties. Clear these and outlook will start up like a dream

Thanks for your help guy's - I do not have DNS entries on the local machines and today I can ping.

I think that this may be a bit of a intermittent problem - I will try manually setting the wins address.

Do you have a DNS or WINS server? If not then I suggest putting into the hosts and lmhosts files of each PC an entry for the servers. This should help your issue. James Collins

We have a WINS server - it seems that the problem PC's look for a DNS name when I PING the server name e.g

ping server1 (server1 being a netbios name)

the pings looks for server1.co.uk

yet the good machines ping server1 and return its private IP address ?

Do a IPCONFIG /ALL from a command prompt and see if you have a WINS server address.

If no, you will have to go into the properties of the LAN Connection and make sure you have WINS Resolution enabled plus add the WINS server address (it is usually you main NT server, the PDC). New Zealand, a great place to live.
