Is there a series of keystrokes to close all the opened folders on ones desktop at once?

If you have drilled down on the hard disk with a new folder per level, holding down Shift and clicking the close button (X button top right) should close the folder and all it's parents.

if you are browsing for a folder and while doing so you open each folder in a different window, you can change this so you browse all folders in the same window, thus preventing haveing loads of windows open at once, dont know if this is what you are doing, but it might prevent the problem rather than having to solve it...
In Windows Explorer, go to View->Folder Options. In here choose custom option and go to settings, and in this dialog box choose the second option for 'browse folders as follows'.
Hope this solves what is happening... Jay~

Thank you. I have NT, and I can't seem to find an option for Viewing folders there. Can you drill down?

If you have not drilled down and have many folders opened, can you close them all at once. I tried the Shift X and it doesn't work in this situation.

In NT, you need to select Folder Options from the control panel. Under the "Browse Folder" section, select "open each folder in the same window".
