I am running Win XP Pro. Basically the system runs well except that whenever I try to use the embedded CD writing software, I get the blue screen of death. The basic message is on the subject line.

I have not added any new hardware or software to speak of. The PC is a 1 GHz machine with 256 Mb of memory.

TIA

Hmmmm, not a good error message. Unfortunately there are several possible causes.

See Error #77 (click to select on the left) here:
Usually this indicates a hard drive issue of some sort or another.

THks for the quick reply. After reading the articles, I attempted to write to a CD again to read the message more thoroghly. The same result occurred. The Technical Info printed was:

STOP:0X000077 (0CX0000185,0CX0000195,0X00000000,0X009F2000)

In the articles it said that the possible cause was bad cabling or SCSI termination problem on a SCSI-based hard disk. My hard drive is not SCSI. I do have a SCSI scanner.

After restarting the PC I copied a different folder to a networked PC (not to the CD writer) with the same blue screen and same codes as above. However, all of the files with the exact same byte counts appeared to have beenm successfully copied.

Is there any possibility that reinstalling XP will help this?

TIA

I doubt would be my guess.
Your IO_Status Code: 0CX0000195

This means a bad cable, or a bad block. Your status codes show nothing about SCSI.

Use Recovery Console:
chkdsk /r

Let this run. It can take several hours if there are issues.

Type exit

Reboot

Then right-click My Computer, Properties, Advanced, Performance, Advanced, Virtual Memory. Set Min and Max to zero. Okay. Okay. Go back and set to "System Managed" and try again.

If this fails as well, do an exhaustive memory test, as this can be RAM related:

I have not had a chance to follow your last suggestions, but I want to clear up my typing error. The 0CX0000195
should have read 0CX0000185. That is why I mentioned SCSI.

I'll read and try your suggestions now.

Thanks again for the quick reply.
