Keeping resolution in Windows 98

Hi All,

Small problem, not a big issue. I have two PC's connected to a switchbox to a shared keyboard/mouse/monitor.
After booting the second PC, when the switchbox is selected to the other PC, comes up in a low resolution of 640x480.
It seems to me that somehow it must be possible too boot it in the background and keeping the chosen resolution of 1024x768.

Any ideas??

This configuration has me quite puzzled, but I gave it some thought and if the keyboard/mouse/monitor are NOT present at boot, how do you get past boot error in the first place?

If you have HALT ON NO ERRORS selected in the BIOS, your boot is going defalt all the way, hence defalt monitor & resolution.

If you don't mind it would be neat to know the exact config of what you have going on there and why.

I have two PC's both running on W98. Both PC's are connected to a Starview 2-port Keyboard/Video/Mouse Sharing Switch SV211K. The other side connects to 1 keyboard, 1 mouse and 1 monitor.
Saves a lot of space on your desktop..
When I boot the PC that is not selected on the switch, so no physical monitor attached, it comes up using the lower resolution.

I hope this description of my config make sense...

In Win2K you can set profiles to hardware. You don't have this option I do not think but we'll see. 2k also allows for forced hardware, which is what you are trying to do. I would try looking in to your hardware profiles as well and use the 'help' when you get there. When I get home I will try booting up a 98 to look into this more.

I believe if you find a way to disable Plug and Play you might be able to achieve this in 98.

In W2K this is the instruction.

To enable or disable a service for a hardware profile:

Open Services. Right-click the service you want, and then click Properties. On the Log On tab, click the hardware profile you want to configure. Click Enable or Disable.

Notes:

To open Services, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Services. >>> Use System in Control Panel to create hardware profiles and set their order of preference. <<<

In 98 I think there are hardware settings (profiles) as well just not as easy to do. [This information I am posting to help out the next person as well that might do what you are trying to do.]

Very interesting concept ... have you looked the SV211K up online for possible instructions to this?

OK ... in 98 you might try this ... go to System Information in System Tools ... go to the HELP section and search for 'startup' ... under it is SKIPPING FAILED DEVICE AT ... follow those steps to try setting the computer to not see the devives as failed/not present ... of course do this from a good running boot with all items in place, and a reboot to lock those settings is a good idea as well, then make the changes in Tools ( SKIP driver agent ).

No I didn't looked online yet, as what I mentioned it isn't a real big issue. It only takes some mouse movements to change the resolution back
I have some problems to follow your instructions, I have a dutch Windows so the naming is a little diferent.

Okay found it...
Hmm trying to find something... nothing so far...

Also peeked at the StarView website, wasn't really helpfull..

But I don't give up, will keep on searching...

After going through all the steps you are correct that it is easier to just change properties after boot. You could switch to the second machine long enough to boot then go back to the first, or post a message on how to disable Plug and Play, and that is all I can offer.

Wished that would help, but some things are above me for sure, LOL!
